ANDBEYOND KIRKMAN’S CAMP
AndBeyond Kirkman’s Camp is one of the premier safari lodges within the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve.
Located high on a ridge of the world-famous Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, overlooking the magnificent Sand River, lies Kirkman’s Camp, a lodge with a rich history and a safari experience like no other in the world.
Sharing an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest and most well-known game reserve in the world, the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve benefits from a great diversity of wildlife.
The reserve is, however, world-renowned for its prolific leopard sightings that are just unmatched by anywhere else in the world.
Guests staying at Kirkman’s Kamp have the privilege of traversing 10,500 hectares (26,000 acres) of exclusive-use land that is home to, not only the Big Five but other rare and iconic species.
Safaris are led by expert AndBeyond-trained ranger and tracker teams, that ensure sensitive off-roading practices and vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of an up-close game viewing experience.
Back at the lodge, one steps back in time, into the classical ambience of an original 1920s homestead.
AndBeyond Kirkman’s Camp has spectacular views of the unspoiled landscape that surrounds the Sand River from each of its 12 guest cottages, including a family cottage consisting of two interconnected regular cottages.
Here, old meets new; antique-style beds seamlessly blend with modern comforts, while private verandas create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
A library offers a sanctuary filled with interesting reads, while the classical sitting room provides the ultimate setting to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
Immersed in the bush cape is a rim-flow swimming pool with views of the Sand River.
Guests enjoy tea on the rolling lawn, while breakfast and lunch are served on the shady and picturesque verandas.
Dinner is a magnificent affair, where mouth-watering Pan-African menus can be enjoyed in a boma, on the lawns, or in a candlelit bush setting.
Choose from a variety of exciting activities such as twice-daily game drives, interpretive bush, and nature walks, private, family, birding, or photographic safaris, or even a game of croquet or tennis (complete with Pimm’s and strawberries).
Our WILD child program is designed especially for children visiting our safari lodge and is filled with fun, interactive activities.
Safari’s at AndBeyond Kirkman’s Camp:
Before setting out on your first game drive at Kirkman’s Camp, the trained guide will ask you about your favourite wildlife species and will do their best to ensure that your preferences are met, whether it is tracking a particular animal or spending more time enjoying each sighting and getting to know the habits of the animals.
The guide and tracker will also tell you about the vegetation of the region and will explain the behaviour of the animals that you come across.
In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits.
While wildlife is the biggest drawcard for most travelers, the guide and tracker teams are also equipped with a wealth of knowledge about the area’s vegetation, including the traditional and medicinal uses of various plants.
Birding enthusiasts can ask their guide to identify birds specific to the region and notable migrant species.
Guests with a special interest in photography should let their guide know, as he will then take extra care to position the vehicle to make the best possible use of the available light at wildlife sightings.
Most trackers come from the areas immediately surrounding the game reserve and, as such, will be full of interesting information regarding the region’s culture, language, and traditions, as well as local folklore.
Game drives in the Sabi Sand can go off-road in search of exceptional sightings, including the members of the Big Five, when not in environmentally sensitive areas or after excessive rain. Afternoon game drives may also continue after dark, with a specially filtered spotlight used to illuminate wildlife that remains active at night
Twice daily safari game drives are included in your rate when staying at one of our AndBeyond lodges.
