Kirkman’s Camp is one of the premier safari lodges within the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve.

Located high on a ridge in the world-famous Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, overlooking the magnificent Sand River, lies Kirkman’s Camp, a lodge with a rich history and a safari experience unlike any other.

Sharing an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest and most renowned game reserve, the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve benefits from an exceptional diversity of wildlife.

The reserve is world-renowned for its prolific leopard sightings, considered among the best anywhere in the world.

Guests staying at Kirkman’s Camp have the privilege of traversing 10,500 hectares (26,000 acres) of exclusive-use land that is home not only to the Big Five but also to many other rare and iconic species.

Safaris are led by expertly trained ranger and tracker teams, whose sensitive off-road driving practices and strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure an exclusive, close-up wildlife experience.

Back at the lodge, guests step back in time into the classic ambience of an original 1920s homestead.

Kirkman’s Camp offers spectacular views of the unspoiled landscape surrounding the Sand River from each of its 12 guest cottages, including a family cottage consisting of two interconnecting cottages.

Here, old meets new. Antique-style beds blend seamlessly with modern comforts, while private verandas create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

A library provides a peaceful sanctuary filled with interesting reads, while the elegant sitting room offers the perfect setting to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.

Nestled in the bush is a rim-flow swimming pool overlooking the Sand River.

Guests can enjoy afternoon tea on the rolling lawns, while breakfast and lunch are served on the shady, picturesque verandas.

Dinner is a memorable occasion, with mouth-watering Pan-African cuisine served in the traditional boma, on the lawns, or in a romantic candlelit bush setting.

Choose from a variety of exciting activities, including twice-daily game drives, interpretive bush and nature walks, private, family, birding or photographic safaris, or even a game of croquet or tennis, complete with Pimm’s and strawberries.

Safaris at Kirkman’s Camp

Before setting out on your first game drive, your experienced guide will ask about your favourite wildlife species and will do their best to tailor the safari to your interests, whether that means tracking a particular animal or spending more time observing fascinating wildlife behaviour.

Your guide and tracker will also introduce you to the region’s unique vegetation and explain the behaviour of the animals encountered during your safari.

In many cases, the guides are able to identify individual animals and share their history, territories, and habits.

While wildlife is the primary attraction for most visitors, the guide and tracker teams also possess extensive knowledge of the area’s flora, including the traditional and medicinal uses of indigenous plants.

Birding enthusiasts can ask their guide to identify resident bird species as well as notable seasonal migrants.

Guests with a passion for photography are encouraged to let their guide know in advance, allowing them to position the vehicle for the best possible lighting and photographic opportunities at sightings.

Most trackers come from communities surrounding the reserve and are able to share fascinating insights into the region’s culture, languages, traditions, and local folklore.

Game drives in the Sabi Sand may leave the designated roads in search of exceptional wildlife sightings, including members of the Big Five, provided environmental conditions allow. Afternoon drives often continue after dark, using specially filtered spotlights to observe nocturnal wildlife with minimal disturbance.

Getting to Kirkman’s Camp

Airlink offers daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport, followed by an easy 20-minute drive to the camp.

Regular flight connections are available between Skukuza and Johannesburg, Cape Town, Phinda Private Game Reserve, and Ngala Private Game Reserve.

Alternatively, Kirkman’s Camp is approximately a five-hour drive from Johannesburg via well-maintained roads and is easily accessible by standard two-wheel-drive vehicles.
