MALA MALA SABLE CAMP

Mala Mala Sable Camp is one of the premier, big-five safari lodges within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve of South Africa.

The iconic Mala Mala Game Reserve is the safari industry’s blueprint for the luxury safari. 

In existence since 1927, this massive, thriving tract of land offers the most exciting and consistently exceptional wildlife experience on this side of the equator.

MalaMala was the first private game reserve in South Africa to recognise the importance of prioritising the conservation of the land and protecting the fragile ecosystem by prohibiting hunting and making the transition to photographic safaris. 

Mala Mala Game Reserve is one of the largest private Big Five game reserves in South Africa.

It shares an unfenced boundary with the world-renowned Kruger National Park and lies strategically between the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. 

Mala Mala Sable Camp is a smaller, more intimate version of Mala Mala Camp and is ideal for those seeking a more private and secluded safari experience.

Mala Mala Sable Camp is situated at the southern end of Mala Mala Camp in a prime elevated position overlooking the Sand River and surrounding bushveld.

Sable Camp can accommodate a maximum of 20 guests in 7 suites – some of which can accommodate 3 guests sharing.

It may also be reserved exclusively for between 14 and 20 guests.

Camp Facilities at Mala Mala Sable Camp:

An elegant, African-themed, air-conditioned dining room.

An air-conditioned lounge/library area with satellite television and DVD player.

An air-conditioned safari bar.

A traditional reed “boma” for evening meals around the fire.

An expansive wooden safari deck, overlooking the Sand River.

A filtered swimming pool nestled in the flood plain below the camp.

The safari boutique and fitness facility are located at MalaMala Camp, situated close by.

A massage service.

Mobile phone coverage (MTN) and complimentary wireless internet connectivity are available at all the MalaMala Game Reserve camps.

Accommodation at Mala Mala Sable Camp:

Mala Mala Rattrays offers guests 7 x Luxury Suites to a maximum of 14 to 20 guests.

Suites are large (roughly 85 square metres each) with the veranda 15 to 20 square metres.

The suite amenities include the following:

Private deck overlooking the bushveld with river or waterhole views.

En-suite bathroom with bath, shower and private WC.

An outdoor shower for a nature experience with a difference.

24-hour temperature control – air-conditioning, heating and overhead fans.

Direct dial telephones.

A mini bar.

Tea and coffee-making facilities.

A mini-safe.

Bathroom amenities, insect repellent and hairdryers.

Safaris at Mala Mala Sable Camp:

At Mala Mala Sable Camp, wildlife safaris are our number one priority.

A maximum of only four guests per safari vehicle is the norm and a flexible operation ensures your adventures into the bush will be intimate and unforgettable.

An experienced and proficient ranger will serve as your guide and host, offering a level of service second to none.

Sumptuous meals can be enjoyed in a variety of locations including the “boma,” the deck, the dining room or in the privacy and comfort of your suite.

Getting to Mala Mala:

By Road

MalaMala Game Reserve is a 6-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Access to MalaMala is via the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve utilising Shaw’s Gate.

It is essential to contact the camp to receive up-to-date details regarding the best route to travel through to the reserve.

It is important to call the camp from Hazyview. 

Travel to Hazyview in the Mpumalanga Province and turn east at the SPAR Centre onto the R536 – towards the Paul Kruger Gate.

After 37,5kms you will see a brown road sign indicating ‘MalaMala’ to the left.

Turn left onto the dirt road – beware of the hairpin bend.

Follow this road for 3km.

At the T-junction, turn right and continue for another 4,2kms to Shaw’s Gate, the entrance to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin.

Here you will be required to pay the per person and per vehicle entrance fees in cash or credit card (Mastercard & Visa only).

Please ensure that you collect the necessary entrance permit from the gate guard.

Continue straight, following the signs to MalaMala Rattray’s Camp.

After 6,3kms you will come to a crossroad.

Turn left at the crossroad following the sign to MalaMala / Rattray’s.

MalaMala Rattray’s Camp is approximately 11 km from this point.

If travelling to MalaMala Camp or Sable Camp, turn LEFT at the “Y” junction just before the Rattray’s turnoff.

By Air

Airlink, Cem Air and Federal Air all have daily flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg to airstrips close to Mala Mala.
